August’s Featured Badges: Quilt Repair and Upcycle a Quilt

August is a badge double feature inside Quiltbound, and these two go together like peanut butter and jelly. This month, members are learning how to care for quilts that need a little help and finding creative ways to give worn quilts a new purpose when a repair no longer makes sense.

The featured badges are Quilt Repair and Upcycle a Quilt. Each one has its own field guide filled with practical help, so members can choose the adventure that fits the quilt in front of them or earn both badges for the full before-and-after experience.

Quilt Repair Badge

Quilts are meant to be used, which means loose seams and worn edges are eventually part of the deal. The Quilt Repair Badge is all about learning how to look at a damaged quilt, decide what can be repaired, and confidently make a fix that helps it stay in use.

Members get access to the Quilt Repair Field Guide, along with video tutorials for the most common repairs quilts tend to need. The videos walk members through the process so they can see how each repair is done instead of trying to decipher written directions while holding a slightly wounded quilt in their lap.

The goal isn’t to make every repair completely invisible or return an older quilt to factory settings. That would be impressive, but quilts do not come with factory settings. The goal is to make a thoughtful repair that respects the quilt and helps it keep doing its job.

To earn the Quilt Repair Badge, members choose a quilt that needs some attention and complete a repair using the method that makes the most sense for its condition. It could be a quilt they made or a secondhand find that deserves another chapter.

Upcycle a Quilt Badge

Sometimes a quilt has reached the point where repairing the whole thing would require equal parts wizardry and spite. That doesn’t mean every usable piece needs to be tossed.

The Upcycle a Quilt Field Guide helps members turn salvaged quilt sections into something new. It includes two quick and easy project tutorials: quilted pennant bunting and a DIY quilted pincushion. Both projects include written instructions and video tutorials, so members can follow along from the first cut through the final stitch.

These smaller projects are approachable ways to preserve favorite fabrics and little sections of patchwork without committing to a giant project. The pennant bunting turns usable quilt sections into cheerful flags, while the pincushion gives even a small scrap of an older quilt a useful new life.

Members earn the Upcycle a Quilt Badge by using part or all of an older quilt to create a new item. They can follow one of the projects in the field guide or head off on their own creative side quest. The finished project can be useful or decorative, and sometimes a little bit of both.

Two Badges, One Very Satisfying Month

These badges offer two possible paths for a quilt that has seen better days. Repair it when you can. When you can’t, save the parts that still have a story to tell and turn them into something you’ll use or enjoy.
