Quiltbound pattern testers receive early access to upcoming patterns and make the project before it’s released. Along the way, they check the instructions, measurements, diagrams, and overall experience, then share honest feedback that helps me make the final pattern clearer and easier to follow.

What Is Quilt Pattern Testing?

Pattern testing is the final practice run before a new quilt pattern is released.

As a tester, you’ll receive a pre-release copy of the pattern and make a specific size or version within the testing timeline. While you sew, you’ll pay attention to whether the instructions make sense, the measurements work, and anything feels confusing or incomplete.

You don’t need to be a professional pattern editor or a competition-level quilter. You do need to be comfortable following a pattern, meeting a deadline, and sharing thoughtful feedback.

The goal isn’t to prove that you can sew everything perfectly. The goal is to help catch the little hiccups before the pattern heads out into the wider world.

What You Can Expect From Me

If you’re invited to test a Quiltbound pattern, I’ll make sure you have the information and support you need before you commit.

You can expect:

  • A free testing copy of the complete draft pattern
  • Clear project requirements, including the size or version you’ll be testing
  • A testing schedule with the feedback and photo deadlines
  • A place to ask questions while you work
  • Prompt clarification when something in the pattern doesn’t make sense
  • Guidance about when the finished project can be shared publicly
  • A complimentary copy of the final pattern after testing is complete
  • Credit whenever I share your submitted project photos
  • A shop credit or thank-you gift, with the details shared in the testing invitation

You’ll always receive the project details before deciding whether to participate. If the timing or project isn’t a good fit, you can simply pass and stay on the list for another opportunity.

What I Expect From Pattern Testers

Pattern testing works best when everyone treats the project as a real commitment. Before accepting an invitation, please make sure the project and timeline fit your schedule.

Quiltbound pattern testers are expected to:

  • Complete the assigned project by the stated deadline
  • Follow the pattern as written rather than changing the construction method
  • Check measurements, cutting instructions, diagrams, and written directions
  • Make note of anything confusing, inconsistent, or difficult to follow
  • Ask questions instead of quietly guessing when something seems off
  • Submit feedback using the provided form
  • Send clear, well-lit photos of the completed project
  • Keep the pattern and project private until the approved sharing date
  • Share the finished project publicly after the pattern is released
  • Respect the pattern copyright and never copy, forward, or distribute the testing file

Unless otherwise stated in the invitation, testers are responsible for providing their own fabric, batting, thread, and other project supplies.

How Pattern Testing Works

  • 1. Join the Interest List

    Complete the application below and tell me a little about your quilting experience, favorite types of projects, and typical availability.

  • 2. Watch for Testing Invitations

    When a new pattern is ready for testing, I’ll contact people whose experience, preferred project sizes, and availability fit that particular test.

  • 3. Review the Details

    The invitation will include the project requirements, deadline, sharing date, and thank-you gift. You can accept or pass without losing your place on the tester list.

  • 4. Make, Take Notes, and Ask Questions

    Follow the draft pattern while keeping track of anything that feels confusing, incorrect, or incomplete.

  • 5. Submit Your Feedback and Photos

    Complete the tester feedback form and send clear photos by the deadline. After the pattern is released, you’ll be invited to share your project publicly.

Who Makes a Good Pattern Tester?

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy trying new quilt patterns
  • Can follow a written pattern from beginning to end
  • Notice small details and inconsistencies
  • Feel comfortable giving clear, constructive feedback
  • Can plan your sewing time around a firm deadline
  • Are willing to photograph and publicly share your finished project
  • Can keep an upcoming pattern private before its release

Pattern testers with different experience levels are welcome. I want to know how patterns work for newer quilters as well as people who have been quilting for years.

You do not need a large social media following, a picture-perfect sewing room, or professional photography equipment. Clear communication and reliable follow-through matter much more.

What Happens After You Apply?

Submitting the application adds you to the ongoing Quiltbound pattern tester list. It does not guarantee that you’ll be selected for every test.

Each pattern needs a different mix of project sizes, color choices, experience levels, and sewing schedules. You may hear from me right away, or the right project may come along later.

You’re never required to accept an invitation. Sometimes the calendar is already held together with caffeine and spite, and adding a quilt deadline would be a questionable life choice. Passing on one test will not remove you from the list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be an advanced quilter?

No. Testers with a range of experience levels are helpful because they notice different things. You should be comfortable using a sewing machine, cutting fabric accurately, and following a quilt pattern.

Will Quiltbound provide the fabric?

Unless the individual testing invitation says otherwise, testers provide their own fabric and project supplies. The invitation will include fabric requirements so you can decide whether the project fits your budget and current fabric situation.

Do I have to make the entire quilt?

Usually, yes. Some tests may involve a smaller project, a single block, or a specific pattern section. The exact requirement will be included in the invitation.

How long does pattern testing take?

The timeline will vary by project. You’ll receive the deadline before accepting an invitation, along with the size or version you’re being asked to make.

Do I need to post on social media?

Testers are expected to share their finished project publicly after the approved sharing date. If you do not use social media, you may share through another public platform approved before the test begins.

Can I share progress photos?

Please keep the pattern and project private during testing unless the invitation specifically allows progress posts. Finished projects can be shared after the approved date.

Will I be chosen for every pattern?

Probably not, and that’s completely normal. Tester groups are chosen based on the needs of each pattern, including sizes, experience levels, style, and availability.

What if I accept a test and something unexpected happens?

Life happens. Contact me as soon as possible so we can adjust the plan if we can. Communication is always better than disappearing into the fabric stash and hoping no one notices.
