About the Badge

The Improv Quilt Badge invites members to loosen their grip on the ruler a little and explore quilting without a strict pattern. This badge is about playing with fabric, making decisions as you go, and letting the design unfold through curiosity instead of a step-by-step plan. Improv can be bold, quiet, scrappy, structured, chaotic, or surprisingly orderly, because apparently fabric has opinions too.

Badge Requirements

• Learn about at least two improv quilting approaches, such as free cutting, curved improv, strip piecing, crumb piecing, or ruler-free piecing.
• Choose a loose idea, color palette, fabric pull, or design prompt to guide your project.
• Make a few small fabric sketches, practice blocks, or test units to explore your direction.
• Piece an improv block, panel, mini quilt, or quilt top.
• Finish your improv piece as a quilted project or document it as part of a larger work in progress.
• Reflect on how the process felt compared to following a traditional pattern.

Embroidered Patch
