October Badge of the Month: Midnight Quilter
Megan FowlerShare
So October's badge of the month at Quiltbound is the Midnight Quilter badge, and I feel like this one was made for a lot of us. If you've ever told yourself "just one more seam" at 11pm and then looked up and it was somehow 1:30, welcome. You're among friends.
What the Midnight Quilter badge is all about
The Midnight Quilter badge celebrates the sewing that happens after the house goes quiet. Everyone's asleep, the dishwasher is humming, and your project suddenly decides it's the most interesting thing in the world. This badge honors that slightly chaotic magic, whether you stayed up on purpose or binding just has zero respect for bedtime.
October felt like the right month for it. The nights are getting longer and it's spooky season, and I feel like late-night quilting is one of those things we all do and rarely talk about. I wanted a badge that says "yes, this counts." Those stolen hours after everyone goes to bed are some of the most creative ones a lot of us get. Plus it's a really fun excuse to try something new with your evenings, even if that something is just staying up an extra hour with a cup of tea and a stack of half-square triangles.

How members are earning it this month
The Midnight Quilter is our featured badge for October, so Quiltbound members can claim it as their free monthly badge. To earn it, here's the checklist:
- Spend some time quilting past your usual bedtime or during a late-night sewing session.
- Work on any quilting project at all. Cutting, piecing, quilting, binding, and hand stitching all count.
- Document what you worked on with a photo, a note in your Badge Logbook, or a progress update.
- Write down roughly what time you finally called it a night.
- Add one sentence about why the late night was worth it, or what you learned about quilting while tired.
That last one is my favorite. Mine would probably be "I learned that I should not trim blocks after midnight." Members have been sharing their late-night progress over in the Quiltbound community all month, and the bedtime confessions are honestly the best part.
If you're not a member yet, you can still earn it on your own and grab the badge in the shop.
Midnight Magic, the October quilt pattern
Every featured badge gets a project to go with it, and this month it's Midnight Magic. I designed it for exactly those "just one more block" nights that somehow end with a finished quilt top. Repeating stars glow against a dark background, and tiny cornerstones are scattered between them like little points of light in the night sky.

It's a confident-beginner pattern with traditional piecing, so it's a great pick if you want something satisfying that won't fight you at 11pm. The longarm quilting on the sample is by Carrie Heyd of Nightingale Longarm Quilting, which I feel like is the most perfectly named longarmer for a nighttime quilt.
One 18-inch block on its own also makes a really cute pillow cover if you want a quick finish. Midnight Magic is free in the member library for Quiltbound members, and anyone can pick up the PDF in the shop.
Our Night Owl late-night open sew
So of course we had to actually stay up together. On Saturday, October 10, members joined the Night Owl virtual open sew from 10pm to midnight. Everyone brought whatever was on their sewing table, and we stitched and chatted and admired each other's late-night snack choices.
There's something really cozy about sewing "next to" a bunch of people in their pajamas. And since a two-hour session that runs until midnight is pretty much the definition of quilting past your bedtime, it made a great built-in excuse to start on the badge.
Something to watch and something to listen to
If you're planning your own midnight sewing session, you need background noise. I put together a Midnight Quilter movie list with my favorite cozy and slightly spooky picks for late-night stitching. Yes, Harry Potter and Twilight both made it. I'm not sorry.
If you'd rather have music, we also made a playlist. Quiltbound After Dark is on Spotify and it's basically the soundtrack for pressing seams while the rest of the house sleeps. Put it on, grab a snack, and see how long you last.
Late-night goodies in the shop
I couldn't help myself, so there are a couple of new night-owl things in the shop right now.

The Made Under Moonlight woven labels are for anyone who keeps putting off bedtime to squeeze in a few more hours of sewing. Each pack has 8 labels: 4 large "Made Under Moonlight" labels (3cm x 4cm) and 4 small moon and cloud labels (1.5cm x 2.5cm). They're washable and dryer-safe, so they're ready to go right on your Midnight Magic quilt.
Then there's the I Quilt Past My Bedtime sticker. It looks like a little neon diner sign, glowing blue script on black, and it's waterproof vinyl at 1.72" x 4". Stick it on your water bottle or your laptop so everyone knows where you were last night. (Sewing. You were sewing.) It's also a really fun little add-on for a quilty friend who needs some solidarity.
You can find all of it in the Midnight Quilter collection.
Come stay up with us
If the Midnight Quilter sounds like your people, Quiltbound is where we hang out. Members get a free badge every month plus the full pattern library (Midnight Magic included). You'll also find a whole community of quilters who also think 12:45am is a perfectly reasonable time to start a new block. You can join Quiltbound here and start earning badges with us.
So tell me, what time did you finally call it a night?
